leda and the swan

From September 25th to October 6th 2013 we held our first annual ‘Art Inspired by Literature’ exhibition. This exhibition will coincide every year with the well established Wigtown Book Festival and will feature arts and crafts with a literary theme.

As well as having a wide range of artists showing in the main gallery in Whithorn we also had work displayed in a pop-up gallery in Wigtown (16 South Main Street). We owe huge thanks to Richard Cullen, friend of the gallery, who allowed us to use his beautiful home to show the work. This allowed us to feature more artists than usual and we were very proud to have a range of highly regarded artists and makers. The feed back we got was very positive.

We were  particularly proud to feature work by Judith Gray, a Welsh artist (1938-2004) who we will be featuring over several exhibitions next year. The work we included in this exhibition included paintings and woodprints of Leda and the Swan and A Midsummer Nights Dream etching. One of her paintings featured on the limited edition poster created for the exhibition.

Other work included a series of preparatory paintings around Mordred and King Arthur by Tim Gray, an encaustic photography series inspired by Thomas Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. We had several pieces of work inspired by poetry, including seascapes by local painter Kevan McGinty and the Haiku Print series by Lou McGill, which also featured on our eco friendly fair trade linen bags.

In addition to the Inspired by Literature Exhibition pieces we also included work by local artists including stained glass by Lynn Morley, ceramics by Peter Wareing, felted scarves and wraps by Elegant Originals, locally produced soap by Wigtown Soaps, textiles, candles and vintage furniture by Wigtown Trading Company.

We hope you made it to both the pop-up gallery in Wigtown and the main gallery in Whithorn during the festival. Whithorn also held two Autumn Arts & Crafts weekends during this period so there was lots of creative work to see.
